The Family Tree of the Marsden Group Comets

The images are close to the maximum brightnesses of the comets (in C2). The times are indicated in hours from perihelion (T). Small circles mark stars found by Astrometrica. The images are cropped images from this page.

C/1996 V2 (T+5h) has returned as C/2002 V5 (T-6h and T+4h). The next perihelion passage was 2008 November 09 (not observed).

C/1997 B5 (T-0h), C/1997 B6 (T-0h) and C/1997 B7 (T-0h). These comets were not observed at their next returns.

C/1998 A2 (T+4h), C/1998 A3 (T+6h) and C/1998 A4 (T+6h). These comets were not observed at their next returns.

C/1999 J6 (T-4h) has returned as C/2004 V10 (T-5h) and C/2004 V9 (T-8h and T-5h).
1999 J6 = 2004 V9 has returned as P/2010 H3 (image at T-8h)

C/1999 N5 (T+6h) has returned as C/2005 E4 (T+9h) and/or C/2005 G2 (T-11h). The next perihelion passage is 2010 October 29 and/or 2011 January 06.

C/1999 P6 (T-1h), C/1999 P8 (T+1h) and C/1999 P9 (T+5h).These comets were not observed at their next returns.

C/1999 U2 (T-10h) has returned as C/2005 W5 (T-1h).

C/2000 C7 (T+2h), C/2000 C3 (T-0h) and C/2000 C4 (T+0h). It seems probable that C/2005 W1 (T-3h) is the return of C/2000 C4 (MPEC 2005-W07).

C/2006 E2 (T+15h) and C/2006 F3 (T+13h). The observations of C/2006 E2 can be linked with those of C/2000 C4

C/2002 R1 (T+3h) has returned as C/2008 A3 (T-4h). The comet was not observed at the previous perihelion 1997 April 19.0.

C/2002 R4 (T+4h) has returned as C/2007 Y4 (T+3h). The comet was not observed at the previous perihelion 1997 May 15.2.

C/2003 Q1 (T-1h), C/2003 Q6 (T+2h) and C/2004 W10 (T-0h).

C/2008 X6 (T+1h), C/2008 Y11 (T+4h) and C/2009 J12 (T-1h)
C/2008 X6 is the return of C/2003 Q1 and C/2008 Y11 is the return of C/2003 Q6. Both comets were not observed at their previous perihelia in 1998.
